You write wonderfully. And you are right as well. We can save democracy but it will be changed.

It can’t survive as it is. But I see positive change with so many good people.

This article that you’ve written about righteous anger has come at a time of the season of lent and we’re discussing all of what you just said and how to handle life with so much hate and how do we deal with our feelings about what’s going on in our country with righteous anger and forgive and love our enemies we must try we must try we must try, but we still stand up for justice and what is right. Mr. Rogers a Presbyterian minister had so many lessons within his show about reaching across the table and loving your enemies. Thank you for writing and being the light that we need to hear right now George.

Many groups across the country are having the same discussion. We’re getting closer, but as you wrote—we must try we must try we must try. But it’s like building a ship, builders don’t try unless there is some part they don’t know how to build. There is a part of love that is not about faith or prayer.

Ask Pastor Rogers to look at the Greek behind Phil. 1:9. It states that love superabounds more and more in knowledge and “all perception”. This includes perception of all the hatred in the world. Knowledge of how this kind of perception can turn love into great love is what we need to stop trying to love our enemies and start doing it!

Thank you Kathleen. Please read this short article. https://georgeallenbooks.substack.com/p/can-we-save-our-democracy?r=4pmgma

If Pastor Mr. Rogers was still living, and his show was still going, he would have his own special opinion about what’s going on in the world, but Hill left us with a lot to think about and thank you for sharing this

We must give up our liberty to hate if we want the liberty to live in a country of principles. Are we going to fight and watch life bleed out when we can avoid it? Maturity has not begun to fight. If all else fails, then so be it! But let's at least hope for the higher ground.

Makes me think of that song. Freedom of choice is what we got, freedom from choice is what we want. Not sure if its perfect circle or tool. Used to listen to lots of different alternative rockband back then.

Expand full comment
George Allen's avatar

I think the reason we want freedom from choice sometimes is because we are working from the dark. We've lost our ability to understand what choices are before us. But do we really want those who have less understanding to make choices for us, or are we ready to learn how to see in the dark?

Im 100% for seeing in the dark. And 1000% more for not letting people less knowledgfull decide for me. Everyday i get wiser. Soon few will be able to lead me.

And ill be as sad as solomon in the end. Not even 700 wife and 300 slave will make me smile. Now i am too joking 😜

I disagree! Liberty historically is only won by force of arms.

Good point. But there has never been a democracy like ours in history. Our bravery is there, but now is the time to see if our democracy can do what has never been done before.

Steve Dees's avatar

You should read the federalist papers. Our freedom and liberty now depends on us. All other agencies has failed to protect us. In the military oath of service we give our word to defend the constitution and it is now under attack by seditious fascists. The question that needs to be asked is “ how much do you love the freedom and liberty we have and what are you going to do to stop this tyranny”? Talk is getting us nowhere!

Expand full comment
George Allen's avatar

Millions of people are still listening and changing their minds. If that ever stops happening, the time for talk is over. We the people is all the people getting to decide.

Changing the mind of a person that supported a fascist coup?

I disagree! Ill use your saying for it. You answered me we were born free. So after birth what makes us lose it? To have the need to fight for it afterward? You mentionned we lose it soon afterward. When?

Just teasing with the disagree thing, i love we discuss

Steve Dees's avatar

As far as being born free, I think there are various groups that take our freedoms. Religion is the big one, society another and many others that you end up being convinced that you don’t need.

Religion is subjective and shouldn’t be part of our government!

Expand full comment
George Allen's avatar

Agree but mature religion is needed to support government.

Expand full comment
Jean-Sebastien Savard's avatar

Your probly right, but religion is what made our government, si its kinda hard to get it out of it. Like a family, when your grand father died, its still your legacy and you get to be the continuity of that man. Sure we can morph into more refined ways. Thats probly what mr allen means by mature religion.

Freedom and liberty is why America was founded. The writers of the Constitution made it clear that religion and government should never mix.

I disagree. We were born free, our liberty is stolen soon afterwards.

As Americans we are born with a measure of freedom that must be used responsibly and defended against those who use it irresponsibly. We have not been completely responsible, and that is why we are ill prepared for those who are being completely irresponsible.

Steve Dees's avatar

It’s past time to become responsible! If someone entered you house to steal all that you have, you would do everything you can to stop them. Trump and his seditious followers are in our house stealing our most valued possessions. It’s a declaration of war!
